Kuszczak out of Euro 2008
Man Utd keeper suffers back injury
Poland have been rocked by the news that Tomasz Kuszczak has been forced out of Euro 2008.
The goalkeeper has a back injury and will not be able to take his place in the squad in Austria and Switzerland.
Team spokeswoman Marta Alf confirmed: "After a spine scan in hospital in Graz and after consultations with a Uefa doctor it has been assessed Kuszczak will be out for three weeks."
The Manchester United man had been expected to provide back-up to number one Artur Boruc but Arsenal’s Lukasz Fabianski will now be Poland’s second choice.
Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker has called up 31-year-old Wojciech Kowalewski of Korona Kielce as Kuszczak’s replacement.
Kowalewski played three times during the qualifying campaign and was in Beenhakker’s provisional squad for the tournament before being omitted from the final 23.
Poland have already been hit by one withdrawal with key midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski replaced by Lukasz Piszczek after suffering a hamstring problem.
